we update: 5.8.2012

When: May 10, 2012
Where: HK Underground (Hell’s Kitchen)
Minneapolis, MN
Who: Kevin Steinman, Sleep Study, Demographics
Presented by: MPLSSTPL.com

Well, we are certainly looking forward to this one. Hell’s Kitchen is a dark and amazing basement venue. We’ve had a lot of fun playing there in the past and can only assume that this show will follow that standard.

Additionally, we are playing with our dear friend Kevin Steinman. Kevin has been known to occasionally use Ryan in his live band and Justin is a fairly regular member of Kevin’s backing group.

Demographics are a new-to-us band. We’re looking forward to hearing them!

we update: 4.1.2012 – tim fite

When: Wednesday, April 4th,  2012
8pm//$10//18+
Where: 7th Street Entry
701 First Avenue  Minneapolis, MN 55403
Who: Sleep Study supporting Tim Fite

When we got the call asking us to support Tim Fite, the simple mention of the name brought forth vivid imagery of the last time I saw the man/myth. Fite was on his back on stage, screaming into a microphone with a screen showcasing an array of images and slogans behind him. He rapped, he played guitar, he was funny, he was poetic, he was…

Well, that’s where I have to stop. I distinctly remember leaving the show trying to figure out what Fite wasn’t (or, ain’t).

So here is your warning: When you walk into a Tim Fite show, you need to shed any idea that you are going to see a concert. No, you are walking into a carnival. And we, Sleep Study, are excited to play a supporting role before Fite turns the Entry into a big top.  We’re also looking forward to witnessing whatever it is that Fite has in store for Minneapolis. (We were bummed to him down at SXSW) Hope to see you there! - rp

we update: 3.1.2012 – sxsw

Sleep Study at SXSW 2012When: March 13-17, 2012
Where: SXSW
Austin, TX
Who: Thousands of bands!

We’re very excited to have SXSW on our calendar for our first year as a band. For those who are unaware, SXSW Music is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 2,000 performers playing in more than 90 venues. Stack the “unofficial” showcases on top of that and the place is a crazy rock n roll zoo.

Being that it is so easy to get lost in Austin that week, we want to give you the dates and venues that we’ll be playing. Please follow us on twitter for a better idea of where we are at while down there.

Tue. 3/13/2012 SXSW. Hole in the Wall. Austin, TX 12:30pm SXSW
Thu. 3/15/2012 SXSW. Lamberts BBQ. Austin, TX 11pm SXSW (wrist band required)
Fri. 3/17/2012 SXSW. East Avenue Lounge. Austin, TX 4:30pm Barbeque Hotdish SXSW showcase

It’s always nice to get a nod from our friends at the City Pages. Here is a snip of Reed Fischer’s review of the show with Tennis:

Opener Sleep Study seemed similarly reserved, but they hid it well in Ryan Paul Plewacki’s tender singing and repeated solos amid the retro-filled rock melodies. The extended guitar breaks sometimes cut like stiff prairie winds, and sometimes felt like they climbed over mountains. Plewacki, a wiry guy who moved all over the place in impossibly skinny legs and jeans, held fast for the ELO-ish “Split the Scene.” It’s a beautiful song deserving of more time — and a quieter room — and Sleep Study will hopefully get the chance to present it in those conditions many times in the future.

we update: 1.10.2012

When: Wednesday, February 13, 2012
10pm//Free//21+
Where: Kitty Cat Klub
315 14th Avenue SE. Minneapolis, MN 55414
Who: 10p: Ben Rosenbush & The Brighton, 11p: Greycoats, 12a: Sleep Study

You don’t have to dig too deeply to discover the friendship between the members of Sleep Study and Matt Patrick of Greycoats. Alexander, Cory and Ryan have all spent time tracking, editing and mixing in Matt’s studio. It’s exciting to be playing a show with he and the other fantastic musicians in Greycoats. If you haven’t heard what they do, we’d strongly urge to check it out.

Scroll down the highlighted shows on this website and you’ll find that we played with Ben Rosenbush & The Brighton as we closed up 2011. We’re honored to list Ben and his band among our friends in the Minneapolis music scene. They are currently in the studio (with Matt Patrick) working on their sophomore record. We’re very anxious to hear it.

So, the lineup is pretty damn solid. The price is more than fair. It may be a school night, but sleep is pretty cheap. You should make it out to this sucker.

we update: 1.7.2012

Sleep Study at Dakota Club Minneapolis January 13 2012When: Friday, January 13, 2012
11pm//$5//21+
Where: Dakota Club
1010 Nicollet Avenue • Minneapolis, MN 55403
Who: Sleep Study with a special guest (it’s Bethany Larson. Act surprised.)

After taking a few months off to finish tracking our record, we are coming up for air and playing a show. We’ve missed playing on stages for people. Not that there is anything wrong with performing for an engineer and producer in a dimly lit padded room. There really isn’t. We just need to get back out.

Thankfully, we are headed for one of the nicest stages in the Twin Cities. Really! We don’t deserve to be on that stage. You know who has played on that stage?! But they’re letting us and we’re going to enjoy the hell out of it. Please join us!

We will have a special guest sitting in for part of our set. She’s a fantastical, talented, cultivated, savvy, masterly, profound, cunning, magnificent, elegant, and commanding singer and songwriter. Her name is Bethany Larson. She rules. Trust us.

*After this, we head into mixing phase of the record and then mastering and then we’ll put it out. We have no idea when that’s going to be. It will be in the future.

we update: 11.18.2011 – see you in 2012

Sleep Study in StudioWe had one hell of a year! For a brand new band, we were fortunate to play a great deal of shows in a short period of time. We’re grateful to all of our friends who let us hijack their bills and gave us sets.

That being said, we really need to buckle down and finish the album that we started. Apparently, we can’t do both gig and record, so we’re locking ourselves into the studio with hopes of being done before 2012 hits.

We’ve already started down the road of booking in January, 2012. So, please check back for an updated calendar.

we update 11.14.2011 – last gig of the year

When: Thursday, November 17th, 2011
9pm//FREE//21+
Where: 331 Club
331 13th Ave NE ~ Minneapolis MN 55413
Who: Matt Latterell, Sleep Study, Ben Rosenbush & The Brighton

We’re ready to close out 2011. This has been a strange and fantastic year. And to think, it was only a few months ago that Ryan called Alex, Cory, & Joe with a “cool idea”.

As we’ve stated before, we’re currently working on our first record. We have been somewhat productive, but are not getting as much done as we should. With a looming deadline, we decided it would be best to make sure that we can devote some serious time to the studio. The drawback of that decision is cutting live gigging. So, this will be it for 2011. We can’t think of a better way to close out our first year.

This Thursday, we’ll be at one of our favorite venues in Minneapolis, The 331 Club. We’ll be joined by our friends Matt Latterell and Ben Rosenbush & The Brighton. Ben & The Brighton are also working on a new album and Matt just released a killer one. Most know this, but the 331 is always free and it’s always a great time. We hope to see you!

we update: 11.11.2011

Our friend Ryan Cahill filmed us playing at Amsterdam Music Hall in September. Here is a clip:
